Helen Mayberg, M.D.

Dr. Helen Mayberg is founding director of the Nash Center for Advanced Circuit Therapeutics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Mayberg moved to Mount Sinai in January 2019 from her previous post as Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Radiology at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Mayberg is a Board Certified Neurologist, trained at Columbia’s Neurological Institute in New York, with fellowship training in nuclear medicine at Johns Hopkins.
She is renowned for her study of the brain circuits of depression and her pioneering Deep Brain Stimulation research The goal of her research is to develop imaging biomarkers and algorithms that can discriminate patient subgroups, optimize treatment selection, and provide markers of disease and relapse vulnerability, in addition to the ongoing testing and refinement of Deep Brain Stimulation of the subcallosal cingulate for treatment resistant depressed patients.
Dr. Mayberg is a member of the Institute of Medicine, the Dana Alliance and the NARSAD Scientific Advisory Board, is active in the Society for Neuroscience, Society of Biological Psychiatry, American Neurological Association, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the Organization for Human Brain Mapping, and serves on the editorial boards of Human Brain Mapping (associate editor), NeuroImage, Neuroimage, Clinical, Biological Psychiatry (ex officio editor), Brain Stimulation, Neuroinformatics, Neuromodulation (associate editor) and Brain Structure and Function.
