
Depression is often viewed as a disorder of specific cells or chemicals. But the brain is also an electrical organ, and depression can disrupt the electrical waves that keep the brain’s circuitry in sync.
HDRF Depression Task Force scientist Dr. Kafui Dzirasa is a neuroscientist who specializes in the bio-electrical brain. He has recently discovered a new neurotechnology that could revolutionize the treatment of depression by repairing broken circuits like a master electrician.
The new technology, recently published in Nature, is called LinCx. It allows scientists to build electrical synapses between two chosen cells and therefore bypass broken brain connections. It allows for pinpoint cellular precision instead of relying on broad, electrical stimulation or medications that alter massive cell populations.
The research and medical impact is exciting because it allows scientists to physically edit and plug in new electrical circuits.
Dzirasa says: “By introducing a way to plug in new electrical connections with cellular level precision, our study marks a major step forward in the ability to edit brain circuitry and understand how neural networks give rise to behavior and to mental disorders like depression.”
